statement
My practice engages methods of image-making which synthesize analog and digital processes. Handmade collage is scanned and digitally manipulated to create a series of works which sit in between screen and surface. This system of iterative pieces is created in a process which investigates both the potential boundaries between mediums, and the boundaries of a singular image. Using digital technology as a medium in combination with the handmade, I consider new possibilities of inter-media work.
Dynamic, clouded surfaces appear simultaneously as terrain, sky, and sea; even as cellular or cosmic activity. Ambiguous and uncertain space oscillates between dense static and rippled light, creating concentrations of tone which condense and disperse. Riveted side panels add an almost mechanical sculptural structure. Overlaid with fragmented handwritten annotation that gestures towards empiricism, questions are raised about the certainty of visual representation and the limits of abstraction.
